SELECTIVE
PALLET RACKING
IMMEDIATE ACCESS STORAGE
Selective Pallet Racking is the most commonly found rack system in facilities today. Its straight forward design allows for direct and immediate access to every pallet load, with minimal load and unloading times. Unlike other high-density rack systems, there is no need to move other pallets to get to the one you need, as every position is a one pallet position.
WHAT IS SELECTIVE
PALLET RACKING?
This first in first out type of pallet rack system is ideal when you have a large variety of products needing to be stored, as it offers the highest level of selectivity possible. For product lines that have high differentiation and low turnover, this type of racking is ideal.
Selective pallet racking systems consist of three major components, uprights, beams and footplates. Depending on what type of pallets you are using, and whether you are storing cartons or both full and partial pallet loads, wire decking is available to help prevent pallet loads and other goods from falling through the rack beam levels.
DETERMINING THE SIZE & WEIGHT CAPACITY OF YOUR SYSTEM
Selective pallet racking can be placed against a wall, or in rows back to back. The size and weight of your pallet loads, forklift and pallet jack dimensions and usable warehouse height, are all factors that need to be taken into consideration when determining the width of the aisles and height of your pallet racking system. The most common bay size is 96” wide by 44” deep.
It is also equally, if not more important, to determine the average weight of the pallet loads needing to be stored, so that the weight capacity of each beam level can be determined. Beam capacity labels are always recommended, so there is no question of what the capacity is for each beam level, as well as the entire bay.
This type of pallet racking can be reconfigured as your needs change, however, it is always best to consult a material handling expert when doing so. This will ensure that the new configuration is still structurally sound and meets all weight capacity requirements.
ROLL FORM SELECTIVE PALLET RACKING
Roll form selective pallet racking is the most commonly used style of pallet rack. They are often constructed with tubular roll formed steel, which provides increased rigidity and resists abuse more effectively over open-backed frames and beams.
Roll formed racks are made from cold roll formed steel, with boltless beam pin connectors. Beams can be easily attached to uprights without any nuts and bolts, but rather with end plates that include safety locks. They are less expensive and require less time to install.
These pallet racking systems are commonly used in a wide variety of applications because of their versatility and ease of expansion or upgrade. Connection points come in a variety of shapes, teardrop being one of the most common, which allows components to be quickly and securely interlocked.
Their flexibility and adaptability give these racks an advantage over others.
FEATURES & BENEFITS OF SELECTIVE PALLET RACKING
- High selectivity, low-density storage system.
- Quick and direct access to every pallet load, you only have to handle the pallet load you need. There is no need to move others to reach the one you want.
- Stock control is easy because every position is a one-pallet position.
- Allows for load flexibility in regards to both weight and volume.
- Allows access to large range SKUs.
- Cost-effective – least expensive of all pallet rack systems.
- Multiple access is possible with the selective racking system wherein more than one forklift or pallet jack can operate in the same aisle.
- Easy to install and reconfigure if needed.
- Can accommodate different size and weight pallet loads.
- Can accommodate partial pallet loads.
